Offering a full guitar repair and maintenance service is a vital part of a good guitar shop for the simple reason it gives customers ongoing support and ensures their precious instruments are  performing to their best, being enjoyed and played.

It is fair to say that the vast majority of guitars can greatly benefit from some professional attention if they are regularly played, perhaps stored away for a few weeks or even brand new instruments that have just been shipped from a factory in a far off country as they may have been subjected to changes in temperature, humidity or a hard life of rock ‘n’ roll on the road.

Guitar repair service

Our guitar repair services will make sure your axe is up on top form!

The word “repair” when it comes to guitars does not always indicate there is something smashed or broken, and whilst snapped of headstocks and dead electrics are regularly seen, it is more common for an instrument to require a “set-up”.

Setting up a stringed instrument typically involves re-cutting or shaping the areas subject to wear and tear such as frets and nut slots, and adjusting the array of moving parts  such as bridge saddles, truss rods and pickup heights that come together to make the instrument feel like a joy to play.

In this way, guitar repair can really make the difference between a guitar you love and one you don’t really “get on with”, in fact a well set up entry level instrument can feel and play better than a world class hand crafted guitar that is poorly adjusted and as you battle to press the strings down, hear irregular notes and endure infuriating buzzes and rattles.

Some old neglected guitars may feel like a slinky new instrument after a good clean, a fresh set of strings and minimal adjustment, whilst others may need more in-depth attention such as frets replacing or entirely new parts to get them back to their fighting weight.

Different players and different guitars can and should be treated individually, as what feel suits a high speed metal player who’s style centres around tuning down and playing solos up at the 24th fret area will be different from a 12 string acoustic strummer. It is often a balance between an art of  feel and experience along with the science of careful micro-measurements in thousandths of inches and the use of specialist tools to achieve the perfect feel.

Whether it’s a dusty old acoustic with missing strings, or your electric bass you need in pristine playable condition for the upcoming European tour, all guitar repair work can be carried out at our shop here at 110 Park Road, Timperley, Greater Manchester.

No job too big or small, and we are committed to friendly prices and service.

For those wanting a hands-on session, we recommend the professional set-up courses and “Build Your Own” weekends  in Cheshire regularly offered by Mike Gough at MG-Custom guitars, a great experience for anyone with an interest in getting “under the hood” of your guitar or the dream of owning an instrument you yourself created!!
